All The Presidents’ Dogs

With this election year in full swing, here at the WoofPost, we thought it would be fun to take a look at all the U.S. President’s dogs, owned while they resided at the White House. When possible, the breed is indicated, along with the dogs’ names. 

Thirty two United States Presidents have owned dogs, beginning with our first President, George Washington all the way to Barak Obama. Our current President, Donald Trump, does not currently have a canine companion in the White House. 

Let’s get a closer look at the Presidential pups:

George Washington – President from 1789 – 1797. Breed: American Staghounds named Sweet Lips, Scentwell and Vulcan. Also owned four Black and Tan Coonhounds named Drunkard, Taster, Tipler and Tipsy.

John Adams – President from 1797 – 1801. Breed: not known, named Juno and Satan.

Thomas Jefferson – President from 1801 – 1809. Breed: Briard. Two dogs, one named Buzzy and the other of unknown name.
James Monroe – President from 1817-1825. Breed: Spaniel named Buddy.

John Tyler – President from 1841 – 1845. Breed: Italian Greyhound named Le Beau.

Franklin Pierce – President from 1853 – 1857. Breed: Seven miniature Oriental dogs, names unknown.

James Buchanan – President from 1857 – 1861. Breed: Newfoundland named Lara and a Toy Terrier named Punch.

Abraham Lincoln – President from 1861 – 1865. Breed: A dog of an unknown breed named Fido.

Ulysses S. Grant – President from 1869 – 1877. Breed: Newfoundland named Faithful and another dog of unknown origin named Rosie.

Rutherford B. Hayes – President from 1877 – 1881. Breeds: Cocker Spaniel named Dot. Newfoundland named Hector. English Mastiff named Duke. Greyhound named Grim. Hunting dogs Juno and Shep. And another dog of an unknown breed named Jet.

James A. Garfield – President from 1881 – 1881. Breed: Unknown. Named Veto.

Grover Cleveland – President from 1885 – 1889/1893 – 1897. Breed: Poodle. Name unknown.

Benjamin Harrison – President from 1889 – 1893. Breed: Collie named Dash.

Theodore Roosevelt – President from 1901 – 1909. Breeds: Bull Terrier named Pete. Rat Terrier named Skip. Terriers named Jack and Peter. Manchester Terrier named Blackjack. Pekingese named Manchu. Saint Bernard named Rollo. Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Sailor Boy. And dogs Gem and Susan.

William Howard Taft – President from 1901 – 1913. Unknown dog breed named Caruso.

Woodrow Wilson – President from 1913 – 1921. Breeds: Airedale Terrier named Davie. Greyhound named Mountain Boy and a Bull Terrier named Bruce.

Warren G. Harding – President from 1921 – 1923. Breeds: Airedale Terrier named Laddie Boy and a Bulldog named Old Boy.

Calvin Coolidge – President from 1923 – 1929. Breeds: White Collies named Rob Roy and Prudence. Terrier named Peter Pan. Airedale Terrier named Paul Pry. Shetland Sheepdog named Calamity Jane. Chow Chows Tiny Tim and Backberry. Collie named Ruby Rouch.  Bulldog named Boston Beans. German Shepherd named King Cole. bird dog named Palo Alto. Bessie the Collie.

Herbert Hoover – President from 1929 – 1933. Breeds: Belgian Shepherd named King Tut. German Shepherd named Pat. Fox Terriers Big Ben and Sonnie. Scotch Collie named Glen. Eskimo Dog named Yukonan. Irish Wolfhound named Patrick. Setter named Eaglehurst Gillette and a Norwegian Elkhound named Weejie.

Franklin D. Roosevelt – President from 1933 – 1945. Breeds: Scottish Terrier named Fala. German Shepherd named Majora. Scottish Terrier named Meggie, Llewellyn Setter named Winks. Old English Sheepdog named Tiny. Great Dane named President. Mastiff named Blaze.

Harry S. Truman – President from 1945 – 1953. Breeds: Cocker Spaniel named Feller. Irish Setter named Mike.

Dwight D. Eisenhower – President from 1953 – 1961. Breed: Weimaraner named Heidi.

John F. Kennedy – President from 1961 – 1963. Breeds: Pushinka named Mutt, who was a gift to President Kennedy from the Russian premier. Mutt was the offspring of Soviet space dog Strelka. Irish Cocker Spaniel named Shannon. Wolfhound and Schnauzer mix named Wolf. German Shepherd named Clipper. Offspring of the Pushinka and President Kennedy’s daughter Caroline’s Welsh Terrier named Butterfly, White Tips, Blackie and Streaker.

Lyndon B. Johnson – President from 1963 – 1969. Breeds: Beagles named Him, Edgar and Freckles. President Johnson famously lifted Him up by his ears and was widely criticized for this. White Collie named Blano. A Mongrel named Yuki.

Richard M. Nixon – President from 1969 – 1974. Breeds: Poodle named Vicki. Terrier named Pasha. Irish Setter named King Timahoe. And, a Cocker Spaniel named Checkers, who died while Nixon was actually vice-president and before he had become president. Checkers played a major role for Nixon in his famous “Checkers” speech. 

Gerald Ford – President from 1974 – 1977. Breed: Golden Retriever named Liberty and Misty, who was Liberty’s pup born in the White House.

Jimmy Carter – President from 1977 – 1981. Breeds: Border Collie named Grits and an Afghan Hound named Lewis Brown.

Ronald Reagan – President from 1981 – 1989. Breeds: Bouvier des Flandres named Lucky. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Rex. Golden Retriever named Victory. Irish Setter named Peggy. Golden Retriever named Victory. Siberian Husky named Taca. Belgian Sheepdog named Fuzzy. 

George H. W. Bush – President from 1989 – 1993. Breed: Springer Spaniel named Millie and one of her pups named Ranger.

Bill Clinton – President from 1993 – 2001. Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever named Buddy.

George W. Bush – President from 2001 – 2009. Breeds: English Springer Spaniel named Spot “Spotty” Fletcher, who was a puppy of Millie (George H.W. Bush’s dog) who unfortunately suffered a series of strokes and had to be euthanized. Scottish Terriers named Barney and also Miss Beazley whose nickname was Beazley Weazley, a birthday gift in 2005 from George to his wife, First Lady Laura Bush.

Barack Obama – President from 2009 – 2017. Breed: Portuguese Water Dogs named Bo and Sunny.
