Marnie The Dog Has Gone Over The Rainbow Bridge

Marnie, the senior Shih Tzu with her trademark dangling tongue, known as Marnie The Dog, has died at the ripe old age of 18.5 years. She was an Instagram superstar with a dedicated following of 1.8 million followers.

Marnie’s story began when her owner Shirley Braha adopted the little dog from a Connecticut shelter when she was already a senior at age eleven and named her Marnie after Marnie Stern, the musician. Shirley never expected Marnie to live for so many more years and she and Marnie became the inspiration for countless people to adopt senior dogs.

The little dog was so dirty and matted when she arrived at the shelter that the staff named her Stinky. Shirley took her home, cleaned her up and got her the dental surgery she needed. After Shirley was laid off from her job, she started posting pictures of Marnie online, not expecting her dog to become an influencer.

Marnie became so successful on social media, that in 2015 The New Yorker dubbed her the “most famous American dog on Instagram.”

Over the past months Marnie’s health began to decline and Shirley began to prepare herself and the dog’s followers for her eventual demise. On Thursday, after a last meal of her favorite chicken and greens, Marnie traveled over the Rainbow Bridge.

An outpouring of sympathy and love flooded Marnie’s Instagram account which has to date almost 45,000 comments on the news of her departure. Rest easy Marnie…you’re a good dog!
