Breed Spotlight – Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is a small powerhouse of a dog that is a spirited and good natured companion. The Shiba was first bred in ancient Japan as a hunting dog and is currently the most popular dog in that country.

These dogs are charming and confident and their fox-like looks have endeared them to many dog lovers in the United States as well as other countries. Shibas come in several colors, including red, red sesame or black and tan with all color forms combined with white markings, adding to their fox-like appearance.

Shibas do not bark very much but they express themselves with a wide range of vocalizations, including the so-called “Shiba scream,” a loud, high pitched sound that tends to startle those who are not familiar with it.

These small dogs are incredibly smart but have an independent streak. They need early socialization and a program of training to live up to their potential of becoming wonderful companion dogs.
